As we journey through life, different stages, transitions and challenges provoke questions, test assumptions, and provide opportunities for reflection. While they are normal human experiences, the questions they motivate may feel too substantial to address independently. The good news is you don’t have to go it alone! Many reflective and insightful thinkers have contemplated the same questions after encountering similar experiences. We will explore the questions and philosophical responses at your pace.
My approach to counseling is to listen attentively, help clarify ideas and assumptions, provide guidance, promote your critical reasoning skills, emphasize future application, and help you develop a secure sense of self for continuous development of your philosophical thinking. Your interest in philosophical counseling indicates you are already concerned with the ideas that have troubled philosophers. Using their insights, you can also develop your personal philosophy upon which you can apply going forward.
I appreciate learning about philosophically relevant ideas wherever I find them, not limited to philosophy texts and journals. Other disciplines in the humanities are rich with philosophical considerations and even social and natural sciences address philosophical questions. Novels, plays, and movies can raise interesting philosophical concerns. In my practice, I promote journaling, bibliotherapy, and welcome integration with dialectical behavioral therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.
I earned my PhD in Philosophy from Michigan State University, Master of Arts in Environmental Ethics from the University of North Texas, and a dual degree Bachelor of Science from University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in Biology and Philosophy.
My philosophical training was primarily analytic and Western philosophy with an applied orientation. My graduate training focused on:
- Critical thinking / Everyday logic
- Social and political philosophy
- Philosophy of science and technology
- Environmental philosophy
- Ethical theories
- Applied ethics
I’m also familiar with:
- Pragmatism
- Philosophy of food and agriculture
- Justice
- Feminist philosophy
My most recent philosophical interests include:
- Human identity and humanity in an increasingly device oriented, big data driven, and socially disconnected world
- Philosophy of death and dying
- Eudaimonia and developing personal meaning in life
- Existentialism
